On 25th July 1944, the Allies decided to launch Operation Cobra. The objective of this operation, led By American General Bradley, was to reach Avranches, moving along the coast, in order to open up the western front and liberate Britanny, thus outflanking the German troops to the south and making way for the pincer movement around the Falaise pocket.
