Merville battery

Installed on the right bank of the Orne, south of the village of Merville, this battery comprised four Czech 100-mm guns housed in casemates.

The Allies were under the mistaken impression that these were actually 150-mm guns which, come D-Day, would be able to fire on troops landing on Sword Beach on the other side of the river, opposite Colleville and Ouistreham. As it turned out, the soldiers would have been well out of their range.

Unaware of the truth, British airborne troops therefore carried out a coup de main to capture Merville Battery in the night preceding the assault.
