The German
army’s battery at Gatteville in the Saire Valley, near the tiny port of
Barfleur, was composed of casemates housing four 155-mm guns, a
range-finding post and half a dozen shelters and ammunition stores.

As its guns were pointing northwards, they posed no threat to the
American troops who were to land on the east coast of the Cotentin
Peninsula, at Utah Beach.
