Evrecy

The small village of Evrecy, ten or so kilometres west of Caen, has the unenviable privilege of being the commune which paid the heaviest price for the liberation of Lower Normandy in terms of human lives.

In the night of June 14th-15th, the town was crushed beneath a carpet of bombs dropped by the RAF, just as other British aircraft were destroying the few buildings that were still standing in Aunay-sur-Odon. The intention of the British High Command was to destroy all the region’s road junctions, as a concentration of German armour had been spotted in the region and it feared a counter-attack.

The bombardment of Evrecy killed 130 people – one inhabitant in four.
