Of all the
communes in the Orne department, Vimoutiers was the one which suffered
the highest number of victims in an air raid. At least two hundred
people were killed by the bombs dropped on this village of 2,000 souls
by American aircraft on June 14th at around 8 am.
As the
hospital had been destroyed, the Château de Vimer in the neighbouring
commune of Guerquesalles was turned into a makeshift infirmary, where
doctors and nurses treated the hundreds of injured people as best they
could
