Nearly 100,000 soldiers (approximately
40,000 Allies and 60,000 Germans) died in Normandy during the battles in the
summer of 1944.
Some of them (mainly
Americans) were repatriated to their countries of origin, but by far the
majority of them were buried in Norman soil, in 26 different cemeteries :
-
16 British,
-
2 Canadian,
-
2 American,
-
1 Polish,
-
1 French and
-
4 German (not counting the
cemetery at Saint-André-de-l’Eure in Upper Normandy).
