Most
of the 3,735 soldiers buried in the cemetery of
Saint-Désir-de-Lisieux were killed in the last days of the Battle of
Normandy, during the retreat of the German troops towards the Seine
in August 1944.
This
is the smallest German cemetery in the region.
It is characterized by beds of irises planted at the foot
of red sandstone crosses, each of which bears the names of four
soldiers.
