The bodies of approximately 14,000 American
soldiers who fell in Normandy were repatriated to the United States after the
war.
Those that were left, often buried in temporary
cemeteries, were brought together at Colleville-sur-Mer (Normandy American
Cemetery) and Saint-James (Brittany American Cemetery).
Designed in a neo-classical style, the American cemeteries feature long rows of white headstones
stretching across vast expanses of land granted to the United States by the
French Government in 1956.
