The
Canadian cemetery at Cintheaux contains the graves of 2,872 Canadian
soldiers, 80 British servicemen, 4 Australians, one
New Zealander and one Frenchman.
Most of these men died during the various offensives
carried out by the Canadian II Corps in July and August 1944 between
Caen and Falaise, in particular the bloody Operation Spring, launched on
July 25th in order to capture Saint-André-sur-Orne and
Saint-Martin-de-Fontenay.
