The coastal artillery battery of Crisbecq was built by the Todt organisation in 1942. With its 21cm Skoda Canons it covered the sector from Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue to the Pointe du Hoc.
Under the command of Lieutenant Walter Ohmsen, the men of this battery found themselves confronting the American 4th Infantry Division which landed on Utah Beach on the morning of 6 June 1944. Of the 406 soldiers in the battery, only 78 managed to break out of the encirclement and rejoin their lines on 12th June, leaving behind 21 wounded and numerous American prisoners.
