For the last twenty years, the Caen Memorial, designated Museum of France, has sought to demonstrate how an understanding of the world creates and better knowledge of its history. Its paths take you right to the heart of twentieth century history, both before and after 1945. An ambitious layout leads the visitor on a journey through history and a refl ection on the future. The Caen Memorial also attempts to demonstrate the demands and fragility of peace and human rights.
The opening of archives, the ultimate in witness statements and the detailed work of historians have all changed the way the story of the Second World War has been told over the last 20 years. Starting on 15th November 2009, the Caen Memorial will undergo the most significant transformation in its history. After three years of planning by the Memorial’s scientific council, the zones dedicated to the Second World War, “World War, Total War” will be entirely transformed for Spring 2010. The changes will take account of the latest historical research so that visitors will benefit from a global perspective of the conflict.
Facilities include a free access multi media centre and a children’s garden.
